I am updating my review from previous. Still great food and now a nicer larger-location brings this from 4 to 5 stars. Soul food can't be beat from other soul food restaurants in proximity. (Martin's Soul Food is horrible). So good we don't even have a favorite menu item. Everything is delectable. Turkey wings, pork chops, fried fish, meatloaf, chicken wings, liver, sweet potatoes, string beans, cabbage...you know what? I'm getting hungry again writing this. This is where you catch your grandma on Sunday when she's supposed to be cooking.
The food was amazing when it was located on border road. Currently is closed. I need to find the location of their new store.
okay, so A-Mayes has a new location right outside Military circle mall and it was packed!! It was my first time going after my boyfriend has been trying to get me to go for months now....he's already a fan Let me just say I had the smothered pork chops with onion gravy and mashed potatoes & mac-n-cheese along with a piece of cornbread(was a tad dry but good flavor)....it was soooo rich and good A good stick to your gut kind of meal with Plenty...at first I thought it was a little pricey until I saw my portion....they gave me like 3-4 pork chops...huge mounds of the mac n cheese which was cheesy all the way through ....I mean I can eat but let's just say i had enough for dinner and lunch the next day....lol My friend had the Oxtails which were plenty and big and meaty....not the little tiny oxtails with no meat...Almost forgot we had a HUGE sweet potato Jack...delish!!...they are just opening so there heat went out so it was best you take it to go but I believe once they are situated in their new location it will be fine...let me just say...no heat freezing weather and people were still lined up....jackets n all...so that must tell you something:-) P.S. you may want to call your order in....
4 stars cause the food was gd. I had lunch special 2 wings w Mac and cheese. Mac tasted like a homemade one w real cheese. Wings fried hard which I like. Nothing fancy with the decor. Kinda a long wait for my food and they weren't busy. A bit pricey for the amount of food in the lunch special. Only thing I didn't like was I had to ask for napkins!!!.....um I'm ordering wings here!!!
Hands down one of the best places for REAL Soul Food!!!! Big portions, cheap prices, and enough to have second helpings the nex day!!! I will keep coming back!!!!
